• Optimize the use of your soap
Your soap should breathe and dry out between uses. Place it on a wire soap dish to optimize the lifespan of your soap. If your soap sits in water after use, it will soften, be less pleasant to use, and melt faster.
  • Can I shower with your soaps?
Yes. My range of soaps are superfatted and very gentle for all skin types: hands, body, face. Because they are superfatted and rich in glycerin (see what is saponification and what is a superfatted soap), your skin will be nourished and moisturized after showering. No tightness of the skin! See soaps
  • Keep your soap before use
Keep your soap away from light, dry, and in its original packaging. Do not keep it in an airtight container, as it needs to breathe.
  • le Navigateur melts faster
Indeed, le Navigateur is the soap that produces the most foam in l'Absolue range, and fans of abundant foam love it for that reason. However, as a trade-off, because it lathers a lot, it also melts faster. Be sure to place your soap on a rack to allow it to dry thoroughly between uses, as this will help prolong the lifespan of the soap.
  • Solid shampoo
What image would l'Absolue project if I manufactured and sold a product that uses a pollutant ingredient and has a negative impact on human health, such as a solid shampoo? For example, solid shampoos always contain one or more irritating, pollutant, non-biodegradable, non-recyclable surfactants. Even if the surfactant is derived from coconut oil or is approved for use in organic certification (which is the source of some of my concerns with organic certification, but that's another topic). As soap makers, we are all aware of this fact. However, my point here is not to discourage the use of shampoo altogether. It is to explain why l'Absolue cannot/will not manufacture solid shampoos. As a company that is aware of the consequences for health and the environment, I must be consistent and honest with you and myself. How can these surfactants be recognized? Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI): this is the one that many soap makers use, but it is just as controversial. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSA) Sodium Cocoyl Sulfate (SCS) Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
  • My Body Balm is soft and grainy. How to find its beautiful texture?
Sometimes, your balm may become granular due to the shea butter it contains. The quality of the product remains the same, it's just a bit less pleasant to apply. The causes of this can be due to the shea butter not cooling down fast enough after being heated up. Shea butter has a defect in its molecular structure where, if it doesn't cool down quickly enough, it solidifies into granules, resulting in a granular texture in the product. Additionally, the absence of a stabilizing formula can also cause the texture of the product to change, which is common in 100% natural products. To avoid this issue with your balm, simply avoid placing it near a heat source. If it does become granular, simply put it in the fridge for 1 to 2 hours so that the shea butter solidifies quickly. If it's always warm in your home, you can also store your balm in the refrigerator. If the problem persists, there are two possibilities: You can take some balm in your hands and warm it up by rubbing it between your palms for a few seconds. This will make it easier to spread. You can remelt the balm by putting the remaining balm in a bowl and heating it in a double boiler. Once melted, transfer it back into the pot (making sure it's not too hot, as it can melt the pot) and place it in the freezer for 1-2 hours. This will restore the balm to its smooth texture. Take care of yourself!
  • How do I apply mon Corps balm to my hair?
Indeed, mon Corps balm can also be used as a hair mask. The shea butter, coconut oil, and avocado oil it contains will make your hair softer, more flexible, and stronger. So if your hair is dry, rough, split, or brittle, this treatment is highly recommended! It also works on colored hair. Application Take a small amount of balm in the palm of your hand and let it melt for a few seconds. Once softened, apply the balm to the length and ends of your hair. Don't hesitate to apply it to your scalp as well, as it won't make your hair greasy faster. On the contrary, it can even soothe skin prone to eczema, thanks to the shea butter's repairing and nourishing effect. Leave the balm on for at least 30 minutes, 1 hour, or even more if you can, then wash your hair as usual. Two shampoos will probably be necessary to remove any excess balm. Your hair will regain its strength, softness, and flexibility. 💡 Tip: Apply the balm to well-wrung-out hair. The moisture will then be "trapped" in your hair thanks to the balm's fatty acids, which will promote hydration and nourishment 😉 Take care of yourself!

  • Without essential oil and without perfume, why?
Note: my statements here are not "do not use perfume." They explain why l'Absolue cannot/will not scent their cosmetic products. Aware of the health consequences, I must be consistent and honest with you and with myself. I have chosen not to include essential oils or fragrances in my soaps and balms. Why? Because I want to offer you products without allergens or endocrine disruptors that do not irritate or dry out your skin. More specifically regarding essential oils, it is recognized that although natural, they can cause these effects. Moreover (I could be wrong, but I doubt it), the active properties of these ingredients are strongly altered, even burned, with the use of lye (in soap making). So using essential oils to "just" scent soaps is wasting a precious and rare product (e.g. to produce 1 liter of lavender essential oil, it takes 300 kg of lavender; to produce 1 liter of rose essential oil, it takes 4000 kg (!) of rose petals). Essential oils are active ingredients to be used sparingly and for very specific intentions, not for fragrance! As for fragrances in cosmetics, they are mostly synthetic, and in order to make them last, phthalates and/or musk (synthetic, because natural musk is secreted "by the preputial abdominal gland of male musk deer from Asia", and to obtain this gland, you can imagine the fate of the animal...) are introduced to fix the scent. But one or the other is certainly an endocrine disruptor. For decades we have been accustomed to using scented products because the cosmetic industry has made them powerful marketing arguments. Despite this ingrained trend in our habits, I have chosen not to use either essential oils or fragrances in my products. This is one of the founding elements of l'Absolue. I hope you understand my approach :)
  • What is saponification?
It's a simple chemical reaction: Sodium hydroxide + fatty substance --> soap + glycerin It's an exothermic chemical reaction, which means it releases heat (1) and is total (2). (1) - Simply mixing the soda solution and fatty substances generates heat. Once these two phases are mixed, the soap paste is created and naturally rises in temperature. This is the beginning of saponification: the sodium hydroxide and fatty substances are transformed into soap and glycerin. (2) - The chemical reaction is complete when the sodium hydroxide or fatty substances have been "consumed" by either of the two phases.
  • What is a superfatted soap?
All l'Absolue soaps are superfatted (1) and all the glycerin (2) is retained. It represents 7 to 8% of the final composition. To obtain a superfatted soap, the fats are "overdosed" so that once the lye has fully reacted with the fats (to form soap and glycerin), there are still some fats that have not been transformed into soap: lye solution + overdosed fats --> superfatted soap + glycerin (1)- These fats that have not been transformed into soap are the guarantee of a nourishing soap that does not dry out the skin. It is the superfat that nourishes the skin. (2)- The glycerin, naturally present in l'Absolue soaps, will hydrate and soften the skin. Its emollient effect will promote the penetration of fats by the epidermis. Hence the importance of having quality raw materials!
  • Cold saponification / hot saponification
Cold process soap making is the method I use to create my range of soaps: no heat source is used to form the soap batter. With this method, all of the glycerin produced during the saponification reaction is retained, ensuring that you have a moisturizing soap that won't dry out your skin. The cold process saponification reaction is slower than the hot process: I have to wait at least 4 weeks before putting my soaps up for sale, during the curing period. Hot process soap making involves heating the lye solution and the fats to create the soap batter. This speeds up the saponification reaction and the soaps can be used as soon as they are unmolded. These soaps may be slightly more drying to the skin because some of the glycerin will have disappeared due to the heat source used. Additionally, the heat can diminish the properties of the fats used. What a shame!
